Elvis Aaron Presley cresceu numa família religiosa e começou a cantar desde criança nos corais das igrejas. Aos oito anos de idade venceu seu primeiro concurso de calouros e três anos depois já aprendia os primeiros acordes de guitarra. Em 1948, sua família muda-se para Memphis e Elvis trabalha em várias lugares, de porteiro de cinema até motorista de caminhão. Em 1953, visita o Memphis Recording Service, um selo da Sun Records, e grava duas músicas para presentear sua mãe. Eram elas “My Happiness” e “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin”. O desempenho do cantor atraiu a atenção da gravadora e ele é contratado como músico de estúdio. Enquanto os mais velhos e conservadores se chocavam com a maneira ousada e indecente do cantor dançar, os mais jovens viam nele o símbolo de rebeldia, de libertação.
